foods to avoid with trulicity

If you’re taking Trulicity to help manage your blood sugar, it’s important to know that certain foods can make it harder for the medicine to work well. Some foods might also increase side effects like upset stomach or nausea.

By knowing what to avoid, you can feel better and get the most out of your treatment. In this guide, we’ll share simple tips on what foods to stay away from while using Trulicity, so you stay on track with your health.

1. High-Sugar Foods

High-sugar foods like candy, pastries, and sugary drinks may taste good, but they can cause problems when you’re taking Trulicity. These foods quickly raise your blood sugar, which can make it harder for the medicine to do its job.

Trulicity works best when your blood sugar stays steady, not jumping up and down. Eating a lot of sugar can also make you feel tired, hungry, or even dizzy later. It’s best to limit these treats and choose healthier snacks instead.

2. Refined Carbs

Refined carbs like white bread, white rice, and regular pasta are made from grains that have been processed. This means they lose most of their fiber, which helps slow down how sugar enters your blood. Without that fiber, these foods break down quickly and cause your blood sugar to rise fast.

If you’re taking Trulicity, these quick spikes can make it harder to keep your levels steady. Try choosing whole grain options instead, like brown rice or whole wheat bread.

3. Fried and Fatty Foods

Fried and fatty foods like fried chicken, fast food, and chips can be hard on your stomach—especially when you’re taking Trulicity. These foods take longer to digest, which can lead to nausea, bloating, or stomach pain.

Trulicity already slows down digestion to help control blood sugar, so adding heavy, greasy foods can make side effects worse. Eating too much fat can also affect how your body uses insulin. It’s better to choose grilled, baked, or steamed options when possible.

4. Alcohol

Drinking alcohol while taking Trulicity can be risky. It may cause your blood sugar to drop too low, especially if you drink on an empty stomach. Alcohol can also lead to dehydration, which can make side effects like nausea or dizziness worse.

If you choose to drink, do so in moderation. Always eat something with your drink, and avoid sugary mixers. It’s also a good idea to talk to your doctor before drinking alcohol while on Trulicity.

5. High-Sodium Processed Foods

Foods like canned soups, deli meats, and frozen meals often contain a lot of salt (sodium). Eating too much salt can raise your blood pressure and put extra strain on your heart.

Since people with type 2 diabetes are already at higher risk for heart problems, it’s important to limit salty foods—especially when taking Trulicity.

Choosing fresh or low-sodium options can help protect your heart and support your overall health while on the medication.
